While most festivals hibernate for winter, The Brampton Indie Arts Festival offers diverse cultural programming in the first week of February each year.
Since 2000, the annual Brampton Indie Arts Festival has developed a reputation for being “Canada’s strangest festival” (Hal Niedzviecki, Globe & Mail). With a taste of nearly every form of independent culture, the circus-like fest is led by oddball composer Friendly Rich, who seeks to inspire audiences with a truly diverse menu of alternative art. From avant garde music, animation, and papier mache piņatas, to visual art, homemade barrel organs and feature films; The Brampton Indie Arts Festival is proud to bring independent culture from across North America to the Brampton’s charming 85 year-old Heritage Theatre.

Previous years have attracted The Rheostatics, Hayden, Ron Sexsmith, Cuff the Duke, Nash the Slash, Scott Thompson, Sook Yin Lee, John Oswald, The Nihilist Spasm Band, Bob Wiseman, and many more to the fest. As well, Lee Demarbre, Martha Colburn, and hundreds of other independent filmmakers have screened their work at this festival. Visual artists such as Matthew Daley, Mendelson Joe, John Boyle, and many many more have been showcased in our annual gallery.

“This festival keeps getting more exciting to produce every year…” says festival director and composer Friendly Rich, “I set up this festival so that like-minded weirdoes wouldn’t feel so alone in their struggle to continue making commercially vile art. There is a noticeable sense of family and heritage that we are building through this alternative suburban option."
